Lego story #003: Speaking of snowballs

Here's something winter-worthy!

Along with the Police Patrol, I picked up a set for myself: Arctic Base Camp (Lego City 60036).

I don't often make impulse buys. But at least this one only cost ¥2,500 at the garage sale, or $18 at the time. Original price in 2014: $90. Current price on Amazon US: $300.

It was the huskies that snagged my heart.

The sledge they're hauling has a carton of two fish, a fishing rod, and a ... communications dish?

The few pieces missing from this set are, unfortunately, significant ones: one polar bear and one net.

This chopper has a winch system for carrying the missing net, which in turn carries the blue ice block.

Documenting one's research is very important.

You can stick a rock crystal in this.

Yes, the blades do rotate!

Now look at this beauty:

It's a two-man job. You need another fella up in the back as drill operator.

Finally, the Base Camp itself, made of two segments: lab and garage.

The conveyor belt works when you crank the gear. It's pretty fun to slide the goods in.

You can open roofs and walls, which are attached by hinge. The lab's opening wall is actually two separate pieces.

A nice spread of tools: ice saw, circular saw, walkie-talkie, magnifier glass, and video camera.

Analyzing crystal...

The snow speeder we all want for Christmas.

Who let the cold in?!

You could park the snow speeder nose-first...

... or tail-first.

Hanging out in the garage with a mug of imaginary Swiss Miss. The crew occasionally watches TV while warming themselves by the furnace. Sometimes, they simply gaze at a family photo pinned on the wall.

Meet the team! Four Arctic explorers, one pilot, one scientist, and one research assistant.

The Arctic Base Camp was my first purchase as an adult... unless you count the Star Wars freebie I got a few months earlier—the subject of my next post.
