Lego story #002: Beware of bargains

It began with good intentions.

My Lego mania began with an innocuous Facebook post.

From that garage sale ad, I stumbled across the perfect Christmas gift for Miss S's best friend. There were more than 10 cool Lego sets on sale. All at great prices, especially considering they were out of print. Though secondhand, boxless, and possibly missing a few pieces, each of these was a steal.

In the end, I got M the safest choice: Police Patrol (Lego City 60045)

It was ¥1,800, or $13 at the time. Original price in 2014: $45. Current prices on Amazon US and Japan: $220 and ¥50,000.

Yes, a steal. But a purchase that snowballed quickly into other purchases, as you'll see later.

While I haven't checked thoroughly, I think there aren't many missing pieces. Maybe one mistake with a minifigure, accidentally swapped from another set.

One obvious loss is the robber's knapsack, cash, and jewels. The latter can be hidden under the lighthouse's loose floorboards. Never mind the jewels, but it's a pity the knapsack is missing. At least we still have the red crowbar.

A sweet boat with moveable parts: the twin engines, antennae, and front searchlight.

The boat-towing truck also carries a small search-ops station, which can be removed.

He looks happy with his job.

Things a cop might need: walkie-talkie, coffee mug, spanner, and manacles. Oh, and two yellow life vests hidden in a cabinet.

Next post: What I bought for myself from the garage sale.
