Lego story #063: Fit for Rebel scum

75170 The Phantom.

Went on a nostalgia-fueled buying spree a few months ago. Got three small Star Wars sets. Guess I have a weakness for Star Wars Lego!

The first: a transport shuttle called The Phantom, or more accurately, The Phantom II. It's from the animated series Star Wars: Rebels. An excellent show, made for kids but good watching for adults too.

I had always wanted a Phantom after watching Rebels. The ship has a cheerful color scheme, unlike a large number of Star Wars sets which are dominated by grey.

The Phantom retired in 2017. I bought it secondhand and minus the minifigures, so the price (4,600 yen) was marked up but not crazy.

Among the three minifigures which originally came with the set, Grand Admiral Thrawn and Kanan Jarrus became extremely valuable because there were no other versions of Thrawn for several years, while that blind version of Kanan was unique. Thrawn is easily over USD 100 these days, and you'd be hard pressed to find blind Kanan for half that amount.

Lucky for me, I'm only interested in the ship, though it would've been nice to have naughty droid Chopper, a the third minifigure of this set.

The Phantom docks with a larger ship called the Ghost, flown by ace pilot Hera Syndulla (a green Twi'lek).

I put my a copy of old Hera into the shuttle.

This particular Phantom actually docks with the older Lego Ghost (75053), which is neat if you own both ships.

The cockpit detaches. You could pretend it becomes an escape pod, though this isn't a real feature in the TV show.

Nothing detailed inside the cockpit, just a standard console.

The ship has landing gear: four "legs" which can fold up when it's time to take-off.

The rear has a cargo hold. You can insert either minifigures or this crate, which is marked with an Imperial insignia and carries a thermal detonator.

The Phantom I bought is old, so the white pieces are noticeably discolored but thankfully not obviously yellowed. In the photo above, you can see a difference in the whites of the Phantom and the minifigure beside it (a brand-new Jetpack Racer; he's not from Star Wars but looks right at home here).

Apparently white pieces gradually yellow if exposed to any form of light, even if it's not direct sunlight.

Despite the discoloration, I'm glad someone was willing to buy the set third-hand from me (at 2,600 yen).

In the end, I didn't keep it long but while it was on display the Phantom reminded me of cozy nights watching a fun show with my husband. Rebels had a good overarching plot, memorable characters, lots of funny moments and, most of all, exciting firefights and getaways in space.
